When he was born, his name wasn't "Stiles" yet. He was just a baby, the first son of a deputy of the Beacon County Sheriff Department and his wife Claudia. He grew up as any child might, raised by parents who loved him and cared for him. Average and comfortable. The family wasn't huge, and working for the sheriff didn't invite many opportunities to socialize with well-adjusted families. But they were all happy for a while. Happy and normal and safe.
After starting school and showing more difficulty with paying attention than the average child, Stiles was diagnosed with ADHD. He didn't know what that meant except that he was "a handful in the classroom" and "full of energy at home." He was given medication, but he avoided taking it as often as possible since it made it harder to think and slowed down his quick mind. It also meant that he had trouble sitting still long enough to make any lasting friends when all he wanted to do was go off on adventures. In second grade, one of these adventures brought him to the abandoned sandbox in one corner of the playground. Usually kids ignored it in favor of the shiny new jungle gym, but sandboxes made great deserts to trudge across or beaches full of pirate treasure. But on that day there was another kid poking around in the sand.
"Want to play mummies?" he asked. If he was going to share his domain, he was going to pick the game.
The mysterious boy looked up at him, eyes dark and deep. "You're the kid with a funny name."
Wrinkling his nose, he plopped down in the sand. "It's a family name. Mom says it's special."
"I don't know how to say it," the other said, tan fingers digging into the pale sand. "What's your last name?"
"Stilinski."
"That even worse," the boy said with a pout. "I'll just call you Stiles."
He hesitated, repeating the name a few times, and then grinned. "Stiles. That's cool! So what's your name?"
"Scott McCall."
"Alright, Scotty. Want to play mummies?"
fatality
Stiles didn't catch on that there was something wrong with his mother until months after his father did. She would forget things more easily and more often than the average person, especially someone her age. At first it was something like putting detergent in the laundry, but later it turned into something more dangerous like leaving the stove on at night. When his father first suggested he spend the weekend at Scott's, Stiles was too excited to question it. But sleepovers every so often turned into every weekend. He knew it had something to do with his mom, but Scott kept him busy with video games and sneaking into the woods behind his house. It wasn't until later that he realized they'd been going to the hospital for scans, testing her brain to try and find an explanation.
It was later that same year they found out his mother had frontotemporal dementia. Stiles didn't know what that meant, either, except that his mom wasn't the same and that it was impossible to treat. She was forgetting bigger things now, like the name of her high school or how old Stiles was or her favorite flavor of ice cream. Stiles tried to pretend it didn't scare him, but one day when he walked into her room it took a minute too long for the recognition to fill her eyes and her arms to open for him. The next day she was taken to the hospital to stay and moved into the last room she'd ever see.
Stiles was with his mother when she died, holding the hand of a woman who no longer recognized him.
(He wouldn't find out the real reason for her condition until years later when the same thing started happening to him. The dementia was the biological manifestation of the spirit possessing her, too weak to affect her behavior for more than a few moments at a time. Her random bursts of inexplicable emotion, her uncharacteristic actions, and her memory loss could all be attributed to that spirit using her as a host. She'd been born into the spectral plane, but without the understanding or resources that would have helped her identify the alignment or taught her to protect herself. Left free to the spirits that were drawn to Beacon Hills, she fell prey to one that ultimately corrupted her and deteriorated her mind.)
His first panic attack hit a week later. He was sitting in class as the teacher talked about something harmless. Maybe it was math or maybe it was history; even now Stiles can't remember what it was. All he can remember is clicking his pen and not being able to stop, the tightness in his chest that made it impossible to catch his breath. It was like he wasn't even a part of his own body but floating inside of himself and away from the world. Even though he was detached, he could feel himself shake and see the tears welling up in his eyes. He was taken to the nurse, then the counselor, and finally home where he buried himself in the sheets on his mother's side of the bed and tried to remember her smile.
(This, too, would later be explained as being temporarily possessed, force to the back of his own mind while spirits tried to take control. But luckily magic was weak in Beacon Hills then, lacking a focal point or guiding force that was needed for it to take root. The possessions didn't last long before the spirits were forced out or destroyed by Stiles' own latent magic.)
discovery
For years things carried on without much change. Stiles would leave school and either go home or bother his dad at work, something the newly promoted sheriff had thrown himself into after the loss of his wife. Stiles knew that he wasn't the easiest kid to raise, and not just because of his ADHD. So he was raised by the sheriff department and its deputies, learning how to profile a suspect and gather evidence rather than focusing on his boring school work. He also talked to the criminals, sometimes, enough to learn how to lift keys off of someone just by bumping into them. More and more he had a taste for trouble, for the adventure that had just seemed like pretend in the sandbox all those years ago.
He got the adventure in freshman year when Scott was bitten by a werewolf, dragging them both into the world of the supernatural. At first it was just about keeping Scott in check, hiding his secret and pretending things were normal as always. But the thing about secrets is that they always get out. The Argent family provided problems, as did the remaining Hales, but it was manageable. But as more and more people were brought into the know, they were transformed from a couple of childhood friends into a pack. Allison, the human with the reflexes and skills of a hunter. Lydia, the genius girl they would eventually learn was also a banshee able to predict death. Derek, their former enemy turned ally who was a source of information on most things supernatural. Isaac, the cynical beta who fought for Scott as fiercely as he loved Allison. There were others, too, but this core group would be the ones to change Stiles' life forever.
It snuck up on them but the bonds that were formed tied the back together for reasons beyond their supernatural abilities. Stiles knew he was something of an outlier, the human with little to contribute when it came to force or physicality. His role was primarily that of the detective, the one thinking about lore and motivations in the search for an advantage his friends could use. They were his family, something he'd valued after so many years of lacking an abundance. He loved some more than others, and many were lost, but through it all he had Scott and Lydia to keep him grounded, an anchor of his own.
But their awareness of the supernatural came with a price, mainly putting those they loved in danger. He gained friends but so many times came close to losing his father, the only family he had left. When his father was taken to be a sacrifice along with Scott's mother and Allison's father, it didn't take a second thought for them to do whatever it took to get them back. They made a sacrifice of their own, lending life and energy to find the Nemeton, an ancient center of supernatural power. It worked, and they were able to rescue their parents, but it came with a price that reached far beyond anything they had imagined.
sacrifice
It was immediately apparent that they shouldn't have messed with the delicate balance which rested on the Nemeton, not to mention the powers that had lain dormant ever since it had been cut down. Each of them were plagued by vivid dreams and problems with distinguishing illusion from reality, but none were as vulnerable as Stiles. They didn't know it then, but he'd been born with the same magical inclination as his mother. He was open for possession, and a prime target thanks to his insecurities and secret fears that he'd follow the same path as his mother. And now that the Nemeton was reactivated, spirits had been released which were strong enough to wreak havoc on his vulnerable vessel.
For Stiles, it all happened as a blur. Sleep paralysis, hallucinations, and even dissociative episodes constantly plagued him. He was struck by nightmares regardless of whether he was awake or asleep. Worst of all, even when he was conscious he began to question reality because he was hit with bouts of aphasia which made it impossible to read, a common way to tell if you are dreaming. As his symptoms worsened, he and those around him realized that he was showing the same signs as his mother did when she was first diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia. This scared Stiles beyond belief, filling him with doubt about his future and guilt at not being able to help his friends. It was the perfect time for the Nogitsune living inside of him to make Its first move towards gaining power and control over Stiles.
The next week would be trying for Stiles. He lost nearly three days to the Nogitsune as Its hold on him grew strong enough to take control. It set up traps around the town, targeting not only the Pack but other civilians as well. It also impersonated Stiles to manipulate Scott into soaking up the pain of those attacked. Then, when the alpha was at his weakest, the Nogitsune revealed Itself to explain that It fed on pain and misery before taking it all from Scott to grow even stronger. Luckily the Pack was able to subdue It with wolf lichen, a poison to the fox spirit, and push It to the back of Stiles' mind. But they didn't think it would last more than a few days as the poison wore off and the spirit once again awoke. They needed a way to get It out of him, and after that a way to destroy It permanently.
Stiles checked himself into Eichen House, a mental institution with a bad reputation but a place where he hoped he would be safe, both from the Nogitsune and from the threat of hurting more of his friends. It was a decision he would later come to regret as it became clear that the environment of mental instability and tortured souls once again made him vulnerable to mental attack. In the end he willinging gave control to the Nogitsune, letting It in to save the life of a friend. With his consent, It now had full control over Its host and moved on to the next phase of Its plan to control members of the Pack and create as much pain and chaos as possible from which It could feed.
Desperate for a solution, the Pack captured the Nogitsune so that Scott and Lydia could enter the mind It now shared with Stiles. They had to search deep in his mind to wake him up and help him fight against the Nogitsune, and the only thing that could reach him was the howl of his best friend, his alpha. Snapping out of his complacent state, he forced the Nogitsune out of his body and was finally free. But once again the Nogitsune tricked them and escaped, no longer possessing Stiles' body but instead occupying a copy of Its former vessel that grew stronger as Stiles grew weaker. It became clear that either the Nogitsune would need to be stopped, or Its former host may suffer. There was also the fear of what the Nogitsune would do without the safety of Stiles as a shield against the Pack. Even though they soon learned the secret to fighting It's minions, it came at the price of Allison's life.
In the end he didn't see it as a choice but a necessity. Allison's death had added a sense of urgency to the need for a solution before others died and the Nogitsune became too powerful to stop. Stiles was even willing to make the sacrifice of his own death as long as it would keep anyone else from being hurt. But they lacked a way to kill it, or even defeat it temporarily. They needed a divine move to not only change the flow of the game, but end it. Though he was weak, Stiles was able to access his latent connection to the spectral plane and draw the Nogitsune back inside of himself. He knew that it would make him dangerous to not only his friends but anyone around him. Wolf lichen allowed him temporary control over the Nogitsune, putting it into hibernation, but with a limited supply he needed a better way to keep the spirit locked inside of him, power dampened, until he found a way to kill It forever.
awakening
Stiles left a few days later, dropping out at in the middle of his sophomore year in an effort to keep people as safe as possible. He knew that Eichen House wouldn't be able to help him, that he'd just end up locked up and slowly going insane from the whisperings of the Nogitsune in his mind. There had to be a way to keep it from killing again, for Stiles wasn't even sure that his own death would result in the Nogitsune dying with him. So he would need a better plan, a way to keep it in hibernation inside of him. He shot his veins full of wolf lichen and buried himself in researching lore, legends, and anything that might hold a hint to the next step. He refused to see his friends for their own safety, and after lashing out at his father one too many times he packed up what he needed and hit the road.
In the end, the Nogitsune was the one to give him a clue. As It got more and more used to the poison meant to keep it dormant, it started to whisper to Stiles in dreams and moments of weakness. It told him Its plans for when It was free, the way it would slowly take away everything Stiles loved while making him watch. When It flippantly mentioned Alaska, though, it piqued his interest. The Nogitsune said it like a curse, "those people" unable to help Stiles despite their fortress. Even if it ended up being a good end, it was the best lead he had. The only lead.
A month later he was standing in front of the doors for the Barrett-Crowley Reformatory which looked even more foreboding than he could have imagined. He'd talked to the admissions board, explaining his problem and asking for their help of any kind. They'd used words like "interesting" and "potential" and he'd found himself enrolled a few days later. Originally just hoping he'd find some cure for his possession, Stiles soon found himself being drawn deeper into the world of magic. They explained that it would be his second year, that the term already started, but he promised to catch up if they helped him.
Stiles still isn't sure how going to some frozen version of Hogwarts will help him destroy the Nogitsune, but he's too curious and desperate to turn back now.

SPECTRAL PLANE
Stiles has a difficult relationship with his magic, not only because he learned of it later in life than most but also because being possessed by the Nogitsune is slowly altering his plane and abilities. Born into the spectral plane, he inherited his mother's line for possession and vesselage. With proper training he'll discover that he can force possessions into others living things for limited amounts of time. As his control and power gets stronger, he'll be able to make the possessions last for longer amounts of time. Also, as a vessel, he is able to house spirits and temporarily use their own magical plane in combination with his own.
UNNATURAL PLANE
Thanks to the Nogitsune's possession of him, Stiles' plane is gradually being corrupted. A spirit of void, Its powers are manifesting as the unnatural plane within Stiles. This allows him to manipulate shadows to take various forms, such as creatures or weapons. At first the creatures are difficult to keep animated, requiring all of his concentration for just a single form. As his corruption furthers and he sinks deeper into the unnatural plane, it will become easier for him to spread his abilities through several shadow figures.
ECLIPSE
Because spectral is a spiritual plane and unnatural is material, Stiles is on the path not only of corruption but of losing his magic entirely. As he strengthens his abilities in the spectral plane, he also exposes himself to more corruption from the Nogitsune. There is a period of time where the spectral and unnatural mix, and he is able to push spirits into his shadow creatures to aid in animating them with minimized effort on his part. However, five years after his possession, the two plane eclipse and he loses his magic entirely for about a year. During this time he does what he can to access it, and ultimately he gives in to the unnatural force corrupting him in an effort to regain any magical connection. This furthers the corruption and strengthens his unnatural line of shadow manipulation until, ultimately, he loses touch with the spectral plane. Only by releasing the Nogitsune will he be able to return to his original plane.

The corruption slowly taking over Stiles body and spirit manifests in some very specific ways, a few which he can eventually block through specialized tattoos and others which are more difficult to pinpoint.
● spectral pool: Stiles is at his most vulnerable at this time when the Nogitsune is at Its strongest within him. His disposition turns very cold and harsh, missing the usual humor of his personality. He tends to stay solitary at this time or, eventually, will seek out someone of a compatible plane to sooth him as he sulks. All his other mental side effects also worsen during this time.
● aphasia: The Nogitsune's mind games manifest most clearly through the receptive aphasia Stiles suffers from, rendering him incapable of reading any written language he would normally understand. From day to day it presents as mild dyslexia which can be overcome through increased focus, and eventually is almost completely managed by a tattoo.
● panic attacks: Though they are rare, these are the physical representations of the Nogitsune taking control to the point of locking Stiles out of his own body. Though It can never gain complete control, the Nogitsune is able to trap Stiles in the back of his mind during these moments and send him into a panic. As the Nogitsune wears Stiles down and he transitions more towards the unnatural plane, these attacks become more common.
● sleep paralysis: Another rare occasion of the Nogitsune trapping Stiles in his mind with limited access to his body. This becomes increasingly more common as the corruption spreads through Stiles.
● vivid dreams/night terrors: Not limited to nighttime, these are moments when Stiles falls within his own mind and is trapped in visions the Nogitsune plagues him with. Increasingly rare as he learned control, though they do become worse the more time he goes without experiencing one.
abilities
ASTRAL BINDING
spectral | vesselage drawing a spirit into his own body in order to gain access to its abilities; in the case of elemental spirits, he's able to temporarily manipulate the same element; hindered by his permanent possession by the Nogitsune
INSPIRITED ESSENCE
spectral | possession forcing a spirit into the body of another, often an allied user of magic in order to boost their abilities; also used to take over the bodies of enemies and either pacify them or use them in combat
AURA CLEANSE
spectral | exorcism drawing a spirit out from a person, either to bind it to another vessel or leave it vulnerable to attack or purification; cannot destroy a spirit by himself as his line focuses on utilizing spirits
KIKASHI ECHO
unnatural | shadow duplication molding shadows to copy the form of either a living thing or other organic matter, mainly as decoys; can be given low-level autonomy to better serve as distractions
OBSIDIAN KIAI
unnatural | shadow solidification used to form weapons, specifically a katana which is his main weapon for hand-to-hand, or sometimes a shield from detection or magic; named after the Go term for "fighting spirit"
SHINIGAMI NO ITTE
unnatural | shadow animation used to form creatures or moving shadows for various purposes; Japanese for "hand of dark spirit" referring to a divine move
● a generally formless mass of shadows which extends tendrils in order to capture opponents and engulf them in a senseless void; eventually takes the form of a pack of wild animals somewhere between wolves and foxes
● medium sized wolves, mainly for companionship though they can also be used while fighting; originally rather cute and friendly, they gradually start to look more demonic
● humanoid spirits, or Oni, which some would describes as ninjas; these are the most difficult to summon due to their complex figures and partially autonomous fighting abilities
